TradeWinds Mechanical Services Begins Construction on a New LEED-Certified
Office Building

February 29, 2008, Exeter, NH -- Aware of the wide-ranging benefits of building green, TradeWinds Mechanical Services is ready to begin construction on a LEED certified office building in Exeter, NH, which will house its headquarter staff. Energy-efficient construction, carbon footprint reduction, indoor air quality are some of the critical concepts TradeWinds considered during the design and planning of its new facility.

A national green building program that was developed by the U.S. Green Building Council in 2000, LEED stands for Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design. LEED certification offers third party validation of a project's green features and verifies that it is operating exactly as designed. Projects earn LEED points for satisfying specific green building criteria within 6 categories: 1) sustainable sites, 2) water efficiency, 3) energy & atmosphere, 4) materials & resources, 5) indoor environmental quality, and 6) innovation in design.

"It's an arduous process to plan for a LEED certified building," notes Steve Sewall, president & general manager of TradeWinds, "but well worth it in terms of the benefit to the environment and the ability to offer a healthy building for our employees." TradeWinds' new home at 151 Epping Road in Exeter, NH, is designed by Banwell Architects of Lebanon, NH, and will be constructed by Bruss Construction of Bradford, NH.

"The building is a very efficient design with a lot of features packed into it," explains David Laurin, president of Banwell Architects. A drawing of the new office building is attached. Some of the innovative design features include:
  • The use of skylights over a central core to allow as much natural light as possible throughout, including interior spaces. "We also employed glass in the walls of the interior offices to allow more light in and to make the interior space seem more open," notes Laurin.
  • High R-value thermal envelope to reduce heating and cooling loads.
  • Energy efficient light fixtures.
  • Floor plan layouts that are intended to be bright and welcoming and open.
  • Sound absorbing materials strategically placed to help with privacy issues.
  • A roof design that will support a future "Green Roof" technology. This will reduce the amount of heat gain to the building as well as treat storm water run off as opposed to sending it to the Town system.
  • Window shades on the exterior along the South & West elevations to help with glare as well as a different shading coefficient for the glass on these two elevations.
"It's exciting to work with an owner who is forward thinking with regard to planning sustainable efforts in the construction of a building," says James Bruss, CEO of Bruss Construction. "The state of the art design features of TradeWinds' office building all work to minimize its impact on the environment while creating top notch indoor environmental qualities for all who work there."

Both Banwell Architects and Bruss Construction are leaders in designing and building environmentally friendly residential and commercial construction. Together, in 2003, they designed and constructed the first LEED certified building in New England - The French Wing for the Society for the Protection of NH Forest's Conservation Center in Concord, NH.
